Back to Fall

By Closet Couture Stylist

What to wear?  What to wear?  Indeed, it’s that time again, and the famous age-old battle cry of “what to wear” is heard every August and September as we all bid adieu to summer and say hello to fall & a new school year!  The truth is, back-to-school fashion has come a long way since the days of elastic waistbands and plain white sneakers ran rampant.  It’s not that fashion has become more complicated; fashion has merely evolved!  In fact, kids today are turning into little fashionistas earlier than ever.
This fall, we look forward to designers assembled collages of texture, print, and color.  We are also seeing some past season favorites on the runways, so don’t throw away your famous trench coat or the military jacket, as they are going to last this season, too.  Black office outfits, blazers, belts, plaids, dark colors, and soft neutrals are the main elements that can be found in the collections presented on the fashion runways for Fall 2011.

Every season brings a wide range of new possibilities for every taste, personality, and style, and fall is a crucial period for building your wardrobe and evolving your personal style.  Here are a couple of tips on evolving your personal style:

Know your personal style.
Knowing your personal style is crucial when faced with all the trends each season.  Is your style classic?  Trendy?  Edgy?  Or do you like to mix it up?  Whatever your style may be, keep it in mind when you shop!  You need to understand what you love to wear so that when you see a new trend, you won’t fall into the trap of wearing it just because everyone else is.  Knowing your style will keep you from buying things that you’ll later regret.  When you have a wardrobe full of classic pieces, you can easily add in a trendy and inexpensive top or accessory to incorporate the trends of the moment and transform your look without spending a lot.

To trend or not to trend?
This is the most important tip of them all.  Before trying a trend, you should ask yourself these questions:
Why do I like this trend?  Is it because everyone else seems to like it?  If your answer is yes, then this might be a trend worth skipping.
Does this trend fit within my personal style and the items I already have in my wardrobe?
Do I feel comfortable wearing this trend?
Do I see myself wearing this trend 3 – 6 months from now?
Lastly, and most importantly, you should ask yourself this question:
Do I absolutely love it? (Let me tell you if you absolutely love a trend, you won’t care if it is “so last season” six months down the line.)

Invest in accessories.
It is much easier and less expensive to pick up some trendy accessories and maybe a few inexpensive tops, rompers, skirts, shorts, or dresses and pair them with your existing basics.  Just like layering clothing to give an outfit more style, the same rule of layering can be applied for jewelry, too, which should compliment the outfit, creating the perfect harmony.  After you have these covered, you can now play them up and add to your personal style.  You can throw in a nice scarf or belt to show  your individuality.  This way, you can get the look of a trend without sacrificing a put-together look.  I always tell my clients that “just like Superwoman, your accessories have superpowers!”  Accessories can add some fabulous, glamorous power to your outfits!

So now that you know all the 411 on back-to-fall fashion, dress up your fall and wear it with confidence!  You’re never too young or too old to be stylish, so go out there and dress like you mean it!
