Bowling for our Veterans

Bowling and fundraising go together like freshly-waxed lanes and duo-tone shoes. Flamingo Bowl in McAllen, Texas has long been involved with the community, offering several fundraising packages for organizations of all types. In a push to do some good of their own, Flamingo Bowl leadership has ramped up on organizing its own fundraisers, like its upcoming Battle of the Banks on February 18, 2017. A percentage of the proceeds will be going to The Bowlers to Veterans Link (BVL), a national non profit charity which supports America’s veteran and active duty service men and women.

Banking institutions are invited to create bowling teams of four at the cost of $120 per team and seek per-pin donations from their social circles. Each team receives two games of bowling in which to earn points, with shoes, pizza, and soft drinks included. The team that raises the most funds will win prizes for each member of the team, and there will also be an individual High Score Prize.

“We have a hefty goal to raise for the BVL donation,” says Flamingo Bowl event manager Joey Peña, whose father served in the Vietnam war. “We know our local financial Institutions will help us exceed the goal we set to raise for our Veterans.”

The Bowlers to Veterans Link (BVL) was founded in 1942 by the sport of bowling to help support America’s heroes in uniform now recuperating in VA Medical Centers, Vet Centers and State Veterans Homes. The BVL has raised almost $50 million to provide recreational and therapeutic programs, arts and crafts programs, music and sports activities, reading materials, board games and much more to help boost spirits, speed recuperation and improve morale.

In the past, Flamingo Bowl has successfully hosted Battle of the Banks fundraisers to support other organizations, and plans to host an April fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, and an October Pins for Pets event to benefit the Laurie P. Andrew’s PAWS Center animal shelter.

“Fundraisers at Flamingo are always fun events, with a great atmosphere,” says Peña. “We hope to see lots of support.”
