Across Edinburg, small businesses are growing with confidence, backed by the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation’s commitment to local success.
In the Rio Grande Valley, that kind of investment carries weight beyond economics. It reflects how a community chooses to support the people willing to take a chance on themselves.
Most people can remember the first time they walked into a small business as a kid and were treated like they mattered. The owner helped them find what they were looking for — maybe even remembered them the next time they came in. That is where personality lives. That is what separates a place you pass by from a place you return to.
In Edinburg, small businesses are everywhere, built by people putting in long hours and taking real risks to bring their ideas to life. The Edinburg Economic Development Corporation has partnered with LiftFund to offer the LiftFund Edinburg Interest Buy-Down Program, designed to help alleviate the financial burden of high interest rates for loans of up to $50,000.
Through this partnership, borrowing costs are reduced, making capital more accessible. Access to affordable funding remains one of the biggest challenges for entrepreneurs, and high interest rates can slow growth before it begins. By lowering those costs, the program gives business owners more flexibility to invest in their operations rather than focusing solely on debt, offering a low interest rate of just 2.5%, well below typical market rates.
Programs like this are not always widely known, but they can make a meaningful difference. When business owners are able to access this kind of support, it gives them the opportunity to move forward instead of standing still.
The Edinburg Economic Development Corporation’s Façade & Lot Improvement Program (FLIP) addresses a different, more visible challenge by awarding business owners up to $10,000 to improve the exterior of their properties.
The program supports improvements such as signage, lighting, landscaping, and façade upgrades. These changes may seem small, but they shape how a business is experienced. A storefront is often the first impression — it’s what draws someone in or keeps them driving past.
In the Valley, many small businesses operate in buildings that have aged over time. While the work happening inside is strong, the exterior does not always reflect that. One Edinburg business, The Dog Stadium, faced these challenges with its façade. Through the FLIP program, they were able to complete roof repairs and install new signage on their building and along the street, improving visibility and helping attract more customers.
The Dog Stadium owner, Edgar Perales, said the EDC has supported him from the very beginning.
“Even before I opened,” Perales said, “the EDC was very professional and welcoming — to me, to my family, and to the idea of opening a business. The FLIP program became crucial because it allowed me to complete essential repairs.”
More than 80 businesses in Edinburg have already received support through similar efforts, using that assistance to enhance their properties and reinvest in their operations. These improvements contribute to stronger commercial areas and a more active local economy.
Edinburg’s strength comes from its people — business owners who put in the work every day to build something meaningful for their families and their community. While they may not always know where to find support, the Edinburg EDC remains committed to being accessible, welcoming, and clear about the resources available to help them grow.
“Supporting local entrepreneurs is key to Edinburg’s continued growth. We’re here to provide the resources and opportunities necessary for long-term success,” Garza said.
Through strategic investment in local entrepreneurs, the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation is cultivating a competitive and sustainable economic ecosystem.
