For nearly four decades, Health Care Unlimited has been a trusted source of home health care throughout the Rio Grande Valley, helping patients recover, heal, and maintain their independence in the comfort of their own homes.

What began as a leap of faith by founder Joseph Ramon has grown into one of the region’s most respected home health providers, known for its commitment to quality care, patient education, and community involvement.

Ramon never planned to start a home health agency when he graduated from pharmacy school in 1986. At the time, home health care was still a relatively new field.

“When I graduated from pharmacy school in 1986, it had never crossed my mind that I would start a home health agency,” Ramon said. “As luck would have it, I read an article in a magazine predicting a 1990s home health boom.”

The concept of helping people receive care in their homes resonated deeply with him. Although entering a new industry felt intimidating, his family’s encouragement — particularly his father’s — helped him take the first step.

Health Care Unlimited began with just three employees: an administrator, one nurse, and Ramon himself.

“The beginning involved wearing a lot of hats,” Ramon said. “I was the CEO, marketer, pharmacist, and whatever else the company needed from me.”

Over time, the organization steadily expanded. What started with three employees quickly grew to five, then 10, then 20, laying the foundation for the full-service home health agency Health Care Unlimited is today.

Throughout its growth, the company’s mission has remained unchanged: treating every patient like family.

“My objective for HCU has always been to make sure each patient is treated as if they are my own family,” Ramon said.

Health Care Unlimited often works with patients and families during some of life’s most challenging moments, including serious illnesses, recovery from surgery, and other complex medical situations. Ramon believes exceptional care extends beyond the patient to include educating family members and caregivers.

“Our team goes above and beyond not only in their care of the individual patient but in the education of those around them,” he said.

According to Ramon, empowering loved ones with the knowledge and tools to monitor and support patients can significantly improve outcomes. The organization’s commitment to quality has been reflected in its performance, maintaining a Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services five-star rating for more than 14 years.

As the healthcare landscape has evolved, Health Care Unlimited has focused on adapting and learning. From technological advancements and regulatory changes to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the emergence of artificial intelligence, the organization has remained committed to innovation while preserving its high standards of care.

Ramon credits much of that success to the strength of his team.

“Throughout the years we have had great team members contributing to HCU’s success and could not have done it without them,” Ramon said.

He also emphasizes the importance of continuing education and professional development. Staff members regularly participate in seminars, conferences, and webinars and collaborate with other health care professionals to share ideas and best practices.

Beyond patient care, Health Care Unlimited remains deeply connected to the communities it serves. The organization actively participates in health fairs and community outreach initiatives across the Rio Grande Valley.

“We believe that one of the most effective ways to improve and maintain community health is through education,” Ramon said.

By providing information about preventive care, healthy lifestyles, and available health care resources, Health Care Unlimited helps residents make informed decisions while building stronger community relationships.

Looking toward the future, Ramon remains focused on the same principle that guided the organization from its earliest days: quality.

“Quality is always on the forefront of our mind. It’s what we hang our hats on,” Ramon said.

His vision is straightforward but ambitious.

“My vision for HCU is to continue to be the gold standard of home care in the RGV for many years to come,” he said.

As Health Care Unlimited continues to grow and evolve, its commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care remains at the heart of everything it does, ensuring Rio Grande Valley families have a trusted partner when they need it most.
