When patients visit a dental office for a checkup or undergo a procedure, much of what happens behind the scenes often goes unnoticed.
Fillings, replacement teeth, dentures, and other dental restorations all require skilled craftsmanship and precision before reaching the dentist’s chair.
Fortunately, dentists and oral surgeons throughout the Rio Grande Valley have access to an experienced local team dedicated to providing exactly what dental professionals need while maintaining the highest standards of quality.
ProDental Lab & Zirconia Center Inc. opened its doors in Weslaco in 2010 after Hidalia Ocana, CDT, enrolled in a dental technology program and recognized a need for local expertise in the field.
“Most people don’t think of the work behind the scenes,” Hidalia said. “Dental laboratories are the place where dental technicians custom-manufacture devices that replace natural teeth, based on a licensed dentist’s prescription form. The information we get includes impressions or digital scan files.”
Originally from Sebastian, Texas, Hidalia has worked to build lasting relationships with the dentists and dental offices across the Valley.

As the field continues to evolve, innovations keep Hidalia’s team focused on staying up to date with the latest dental technology, helping them better serve dentists and, ultimately, their patients.
“Digital technology workflow has transformed the dental industry for the better, making treatments faster, more precise, and improved patient outcomes by making dental care safer and more effective on the clinical side,” she said.
“For dental laboratories, technology has improved, replacing manual analog, time-consuming plaster and wax processes. 3D printers, computer-aided design, manufacturing software, and milling machines can now produce restorations faster and more accurately.”
Zirconia is another huge breakthrough in modern dentistry and implants. Scientifically, zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) is a tough, white crystalline ceramic oxide derived from zircon sand.
For patients and dentists, it offers a durable, natural-looking tooth replacement that can rival or even surpass traditional ceramic options.
“We have specialized in designing dental zirconia restorations, which have become very popular in the dental industry,” she said. “Zirconia combines extreme strength with a lifelike tooth appearance, often called ceramic alloy. It is stronger than natural tooth enamel, making it fracture-resistant, biocompatible, and achieves good esthetics.”
As technology continues to improve and positive feedback grows, Hidalia feels increasingly confident in her decision to start the venture. Still, when discussing ProDental’s success, she remains grounded in gratitude.
“First, I would like to thank each clinician who give me the opportunity to trust in my ability to fabricate life-changing restorations for their patients. I do have so many success stories to share.”
She also emphasized that dental technology and laboratory work are career paths worth exploring, especially since many people may not realize these professions are available to them.
“Since this field is not common, many miss the exciting opportunities of dental laboratory technology; it is a career that impacts the lives of many, restoring their smiles,” she said.
“The dental laboratory field consists of six different specialties to choose from. These include Ceramics and Crowns, Bridge, Complete Dentures, Digital Workflow, Partial Dentures, Orthodontics and Implants. All these specialties are important; however, continuing education and having the ability to fabricate different types of prostheses is what separates you from finding success.”
Being local is an important part of Hidalia’s work and the values behind ProDental. Hidalia and her sister, Diana, have built a strong reputation in the community, but more importantly, they have made a meaningful impact for others.
“Having the opportunity to partner and serve as a laboratory technician with our local dental practices here in the Rio Grande Valley makes me feel fortunate,” Hidalia said.
“I feel proud that all the continuing education and state-of-the-art technology investment is well worth it, especially that we are in the deep South Texas area where not a lot of representation or support is available.”
Hidalia emphasized the importance of making patients feel included in the process and ensuring they have a voice in their dental care and treatment decisions.
