The Southern Exposures Youth Nature Photo Contest is now open, inviting young photographers ages 6 to 18 to capture the beauty of the natural world this summer. The free contest is organized by the Valley Land Fund in partnership with the City of McAllen’s Quinta Mazatlán and is designed to encourage families to get kids outdoors this summer—exploring parks, nature centers, and backyards and encouraging families to spend more time outdoors this summer.

Participants may submit up to six original photos of South Texas nature, including birds, butterflies, sunflowers, lizards, sunsets, and other outdoor scenes. The contest highlights the Rio Grande Valley’s natural beauty and encourages kids to explore and share what they see.  Submissions are accepted online through July 31, 2026, at Valley Land Fund.

All participants will be recognized at a free Awards Ceremony and Photo Exhibit on Saturday, August 13, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. at Quinta Mazatlán. Each youth entrant will have one photo displayed and will receive a commemorative gift and recognition. The evening will also include family activities and a live Birds of Prey show.

Colleen Hook, Executive Director of Quinta Mazatlán, said she is proud to partner on the contest, calling it a fun way for families to get outside together and encouraging kids to share how they see nature through their own eyes.

The contest is supported by the Valley Land Fund, the City of McAllen, H-E-B, Magic Valley Electric Cooperative, and AEP Texas. For more information, contact Quinta Mazatlán at (956) 681-3370 or visit Valley Land Fund or Quinta Mazatlán.
