La Joya, Texas- The Alliance for Drug Abuse Prevention (ADAP) Coalition, a program of Behavioral Health Solutions of South Texas, in collaboration with the Sullivan City Police Department, La Joya ISD, and the Peñitas Police Department are hosting a summit discussing the issues of prescription drug misuse and abuse.
According to reports from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health in 2014, teens begin to experiment with prescription medications as early as 12 years old. In the 2016 Texas School Survey, 1 out of 10 teens in our region reported ever having used codeine cough syrup not prescribed to them.
The ADAP coalition is aware that prescription drug abuse is an issue in our area and as such, a panel of speakers is being assembled to discuss the legal consequences of prescription drug abuse, enforcement efforts related to prescription drug abuse, local and regional data on misuse/abuse of prescription drugs, safeguarding and disposal strategies, in addition to treatment options and resources. Speakers represented will be from the law enforcement, prosecutions, pharmaceutical, and medical/treatment communities.
The ADAP coalition encourages the general public to attend as this is a free event offered to the community with the hopes of raising awareness by educating and informing the public of the risk involved in prescription drug abuse and the need to continue collaborative efforts benefitting the communities of La Joya and Penitas.
