Santa Fe Wine Classic

The ninth annual Santa Fe Wine Classic, “the most coveted ticket in town,” will be taking place at historic Quinta Mazatlan, Friday, October 13 from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The Santa Fe Steakhouse and McAllen Chamber of Commerce come together to present this stellar event that happens one night a year.

This luxurious experience showcases over 300 wines from the most renowned winery regions across the world. Supporters will also enjoy a delicious menu, exquisite champagne and a dessert lounge catered by the Valley’s most prestigious restaurants. The McAllen Chamber of Commerce is gleaming over this year’s theme, Vintage Hollywood Glamour: A Night With the Stars and is inviting its participants to come dressed like icons such as the Rat Pack, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe or Dean Martin. Contributors are also invited to partake in the silent auction and enjoy festive live music. All proceeds benefit the McAllen Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Program, which awards a $1,000 scholarship to each of the top 25 graduating students who participate in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Lamar Academy in McAllen, TX.

The IB program is an “academically rigorous program of studies, [that will help] students develop into more knowledgeable individuals.” It’s open to McAllen ISD students from first to twelfth grade. This year
Gabriel Ramirez, a 2017 IB Diploma graduate of McAllen High School, received a near-perfect score on his International Baccalaureate Diploma exams, earning 44 of 45 possible points across his 6 IB course and Theory of Knowledge assessments. His score is the highest earned in Lamar Academy history and places Gabriel in the top one percentile in the world.

“I’ve been involved with the IB program since I was a freshman, and it’s been really important for me because teachers there are so excellent. They really bring out the best in students and they brought out the best in me I think. I know that I could not have done it without them,” says Gabriel.

Gerry-Garcia2When asked why continuing to support the IB program was important, Gerry Garcia, vice president of Special Projects & Government Affairs for the McAllen Chamber of Commerce said, “It’s important for the Chamber of Commerce, an organization primarily for businesses, to show we also care about the community that lives and goes to school here. The scholarship program makes the city of McAllen competitive to the rest of the Valley and Texas, making businesses and organizations want to open up here. We also want to demonstrate to the residents of McAllen that they are given the opportunities they deserve.”

The event was initiated by Sony Rego, one of the owners of Santa Fe Steakhouse, who contacted the McAllen Chamber of Commerce wanting to help raise money for a cause. Together they created what is now the notorious Santa Fe Wine Classic, an event that over the years has helped hundreds of students in McAllen receive valuable scholarships.

“Though the amount is relatively small, a lot of the kids have told us they wouldn’t have had a way to get things like dorm room supplies, laptops or books without it,” said Garcia.

Anyone in the community can participate in this fundraiser that is both fun and purposeful.

Tickets will be available at the McAllen Chamber and Santa Fe Steakhouse. For more information, please call Gerry Garcia at 956-682-2871. Tickets are $125 per person or $1,500 for a reserved, eight seat table.
