Due to recent weather events and the aftermath of Hurricane Hanna the Uniting Neighbors in Drug Abuse Defense (UNIDAD) Coalition decided to rescheduled their upcoming Strengthening Roots Summit. There is still an opportunity to engage with our families, a time in which parents and children can grow closer together. According to Samhsa, Parents have a significant influence in their children’s decision to experiment with alcohol and other drugs. The UNIDAD Coalition, would like for parents to feel empowered and prepared to not just have conversations about alcohol use, but also participate in conversations about stress, and respect among the families.
This year the coalition will be hosting a “Strengthening Roots: A Virtual Family Engagement Summit” which will focus on strategies to encourage and motivate parents actively engage in bonding and maintaining positive relationships with their children during this unusual time.
The summit will be a three-day event with will be started off by a Kick Off event which will include raffles and family engagement activities and games, both session dates will have Comedian/Magician and Valley Native Oscar Munoz as our keynote speaker, while the rest of the sessions will be tailored for their specific audience during that day. During the adult’s sessions, there will be conversations on how to address alcohol use with teens, setting rules and guidelines during this time at home. In addition, there will be the opportunity to address stress management, which is one of the most common emotions many are feeling right now. Lastly the summit will end with an activity, focused on family dynamics, the respect between parent and child relationships. Day two will similar in structured but tailored for a youth audience, and will include Prevention Specialist and Youth Speaker Ray Lozano.
